About my work:
My work is an exploration of the mutualistic relationship shared between coexisting communities within the entirety of a city.
I lay bare my personal obsessions with my own belongings: my impulses for collecting, categorizing, and arranging. Then too, I seek out the discarded belongings of others that have been donated or thrown away. I am particularly drawn to objects that are site specific and evocative of the people who have existed, or who are currently existing, within each locale.
In my “Spaintings”(sculpture paintings), these once-downcycling artifacts become reborn into interactive assemblages of the culture found within a city’s neighborhoods. Each piece interacts with another in the space, carefully mapping the topography of an area. A city is not linear but cyclical, so to reach a work, you must experience another. I pour latex paint that oozes and engulfs separate items and fuses them together which spreads across the work to become roads and paths for transit around the space.
Portions are identifiable through the recognition of pieces of the whole. An ironing board here or a laundry hamper there, that when combined, transcend their functionalities to become the narrator of a city’s story.
